How to Measure a Wall for a Wallpaper Mural — Step by Step

Measuring the wall — the short answer

Measure the width and height of the wall at their widest points, add 3–5 cm allowance per side and choose the next larger wall mural size. You trim the excess after hanging with a sharp snap-off knife — that is far better than ordering a mural a few centimetres too small, which cannot be enlarged afterwards.

Step 1: Measure the width of the wall

Run the tape measure at floor level, at mid-height and just below the ceiling. Walls are rarely perfectly straight — work with the largest of the three measurements. If the wall is 348 cm at its widest point, you need a wallpaper mural of at least 350 cm.

Step 2: Measure the height of the wall

Do the same for the height: measure at both corners and in the middle of the wall. In older buildings the differences can be 2–3 cm. Work with the largest value. Most of our customers choose wall murals 250 or 280 cm high.

Step 3: Windows and doors — do not subtract them

A wallpaper mural is ordered for the full wall dimensions, without subtracting windows and doors. The openings are cut out with the snap-off knife after hanging. This keeps the design continuous — trying to match up an interrupted design from separate pieces around a window almost never works out cleanly.

What if your wall has non-standard dimensions?

Choose the next larger standard size and trim the excess after hanging. Example: a wall of 320 × 260 cm → order 350 × 250? No — the 250 cm height would be too small. The right choice is 400 × 280 cm; you trim off 80 cm of width and 20 cm of height. The design does not lose its proportions, because the edges are trimmed, not the graphic squeezed.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Can the wallpaper mural be smaller than the wall?
Yes — as a deliberate design element (for example a panel above the bed, surrounded by wall paint). But if you want to cover the whole wall, the mural must be at least as large as the wall.

How much allowance should I add?
3–5 cm per edge is enough for straight walls. In older buildings with uneven corners, 5–7 cm is safer.

How do I measure a wall with a sloped ceiling?
Measure the full rectangle (largest width × largest height) and order the mural in that size — you cut the slope to shape after hanging.
